HMS Pinafore suffers from a surprisingly weak libretto. The basic plot (baby changing motif) is droll enough, but Little Buttercup's revelation that she mixed up Ralph and Captain Corcoran followed by the latter pair immediately appearing briskly on stage already in uniforms of Captain and humble seaman respectively, takes some explanation.
Also, for the Captain to be Josephine's father and Ralph the young suitor to be mixed up in babyhood would require Ralph and the Captain to be at least middle-aged!
